SUMMARY:Beats of Africa
DESCRIPTION:Rhythm and Movement on African Drumming and Balafon Ensemble \n\n\n\nBeat of Africa : Rhythm and Movement \n\n\n\nBeat of Africa is an energetic\, hands-on musical journey where children (6/7-17) don’t just listen to rhythm they create it. Participants are introduced to a rich variety of traditional African instruments\, including African drums such as djembe and dun dun\, balafons (wooden xylophones)\, kalimba (thumb piano)\, kosh mash shakers\, and other percussive instruments from across the continent. Children learn how to hold\, strike and control each instrument\, building rhythms step by step. \n\n\n\nSessions focus on ensemble playing\, where individual patterns combine to form powerful layered compositions. Through guided improvisation\, children gain confidence exploring their own ideas while listening and responding to others. We encourage collaboration\, creativity and teamwork\, helping young people understand how rhythm connects community. \n\n\n\nChildren who already play Western instruments such as piano\, violin\, guitar\, flute or brass\, are warmly invited to bring them along. We explore fusion\, blending African rhythms with Western melodies to create a dynamic orchestral-style experience. Participants learn how different musical traditions can work together in harmony. \n\n\n\nThroughout the workshop\, movement and rhythm go hand in hand. Energy builds towards a final performance\, where children showcase what they have learned\, combining drumming\, melody\, improvisation and dance into a vibrant celebratory presentation. By the end\, every participant feels part of something powerful\, creative and shared.
